Learning Objectives
    • Understand what programming is.
    • Learn why programming exists.
    • Discover where programming is used in everyday life.
    • Understand how programmers think when solving problems.
    • Get ready to start learning Python.

What is Programming?

Welcome to your very first Python lesson!

Imagine you have a robot sitting beside you. The robot is incredibly fast, never gets tired, and follows instructions perfectly.

There is only one problem...

It has no idea what to do unless you tell it exactly what to do.

Programming is the process of writing clear instructions that tell a computer what to do.

Throughout this course, you'll learn how to speak to computers using Python.

By the end of this lesson, you won't write much code yet you'll understand the idea behind programming, which is far more important.

Why Does Programming Exist?

Computers are amazing machines, but they cannot think like humans.

They only follow instructions.

Think about ordering food from a restaurant.

Problem

You are hungry. -> Idea -> Order food.

Solution Steps 1. Choose food. 2. Pay. 3. Wait. 4. Eat.

Choose Food Pay Wait Eat

Programming works exactly the same way.

A programmer breaks a big problem into many tiny steps that a computer can follow.

Fun Fact: Every mobile app, website, ATM, game, and smart TV follows instructions written by programmers.

Programming Around You

Programming is everywhere.

How Programmers Solve Problems

Instead of jumping straight into code, professionals think first.

1. Identify Problem 2. Analyze 3. Design 4. Implement 5. Test 6. Deploy

This simple workflow will become your best friend throughout this course.

Common Beginner Mistakes
  • Thinking programming is memorizing code.
  • Trying to solve huge problems all at once.
  • Giving up after the first error.

Remember: programmers become better by practising, not memorizing.

You Write Instructions PY Python Computer Result

Mini Project

Pretend you're designing a robot that washes clothes.

Write the instructions in plain English.

Example:

  1. Open washing machine.
  2. Put clothes inside.
  3. Add detergent.
  4. Start washing.
  5. Wait.
  6. Remove clothes.

Notice that this is not code.

It is computational thinking.

Lesson Summary

Today you learned:

  • Programming is giving instructions to computers.
  • Computers do not think like humans.
  • Every program is built from small steps.
  • Good programmers solve problems before writing code.
